This presentation will (1) review the challenges facing Himalayan tectonic models, focusing on the disparity between the dominantly 2D models and the 3D diversity of Himalayan tectonics, (2) present a new tectonic model that shows how lateral propagation of slab detachment at the base of the orogenic system can explain the 3D crustal and topographic evolution of the Himalaya, with concomitant forcing of climatic and biotic systems, and (3) explain how on-going Peking U investigations of Himalayan high-pressure metamorphism can supply a key test of this new model of Himalayan tectonics.
